The History of SALT THERAPY

For centuries, salt therapy has been used with great success in many different countries such as Wieliczka (Poland), Hallein (Austria) Praid (Romania) and the Uyuni Salt Flat (Bolivia)

The ancient Greeks practiced ‘halo-therapy’ (halos = salt in Greek) or salt therapy because of its anti-bacterial and anti-inflammatory effects which help to ease respiratory symptoms. It took over a thousand years to rediscover the beneficial effects that salt caves and salt mines can have on respiratory health problems.

The 19th-century Polish physician, Dr. Felix Bochkowsky, discovered that salt miners didn’t suffer from any breathing or respiratory problems. Following his discovery, the practice of salt therapy spread throughout Eastern Europe and salt therapy became “part of their history”.

Uyuni Salt Flat, Bolivia

For centuries, salt therapy has been used with great success in many different countries such as Wieliczka (Poland), Hallein (Austria) Praid (Romania) and the Uyuni Salt Flat (Bolivia)

Also, near the German town of Ennepetal, a salt cave was used as a protection against heavy bombing during World War II. Later on, it was confirmed by scientists that many of those who had been using the cave as a bomb shelter was indeed cured of their asthma, chronic bronchitis, and other diseases of the respiratory tract. The healthy individuals hiding in that cave had strengthened their immunity and stopped catching colds.

Of course, salt caves tend to be few and far between in the UK, so now an alternative method of engaging in these benefits of salt inhalation has been developed in a way that is simple to use, cost-effective and can be used in the comfort of your own home. Meet ‘the AiroMedic’.

Salt Therapy Background

The AiroMedic dry salt inhaler contains opaque (white) crystal salt. The user inhales micron-sized particles of salt through the mouthpiece of the pipe. These particles target the upper and lower respiratory tract and provide effective treatment for all respiratory conditions.

Salt therapy has typically been in existence for >2000 years and illustrates many benefits noted throughout history. Hippocrates recommended salt inhalation therapy and during the 1800s salt therapy was officially recognised as Speleotherapy by Polish physician Dr. F. Bochkowsky when he noticed salt miners rarely suffered respiratory diseases and attributed this to the inhalation of salt particles as being beneficial to health. HT is the result of excavating salt from caves for flexible use in other locations by artificially reproducing the microclimate found in salt mines.

The Leading scientific Russian institutions have been researching the development and rationale of the mechanisms for, and clinical efficacy of HT since the late 1980s. Therapeutic effects from HT are achieved by the inhalation of micro salt particles and HT has been authorised by the Russian and Lithuanian Ministries of Public Health. Fine dry salt has an inhibitive effect on bacterial growth, the degradation of pathogenic properties follows that leads to improvements in the respiratory tract biocenosis. This results in mucolyticdrainage of the bronchia and an anti-inflammatory effect is achieved.

Dry salt inhaler devices increase sputum expectoration and assist in the relief of respiratory airways which has major importance in the prevention and the speeding up of healing respiratory infections diseases. In COPD patients, these symptoms may be life-threatening and where dry salt inhalers are used on a regular basis for long periods of time, improvements to a patient’s functioning are noted that lead to a better quality of life.

The research on the development and rationale of the action mechanisms and clinical efficacy of halo therapy has been carried out from the end of 80’s until the present day in collaboration with leading scientific institutions of Russia. From 1991-1995, Prof.Chervinskaya, together with representatives from the Russian Research Institute of Pulmonology (Moscow) and St. Petersburg State Medical University, performed a series of testing on the mechanisms of fine dry salt aerosol effects and procedures for application of halo-aerosol technology for patients of the Pulmonology Institute. The outcome is summed up in the Guidelines for the Application of Medical Technology of Halotherapy for Overall Treatment and Rehabilitation of Respiratory Diseases and approved by the Ministry of Health (MOH) at Roszdravnadzor (The Russian Federation). This is how the method of controlled halotherapy became officially acknowledged, accepted and authorised for use in any medical practice or institution in Russia.

Since 1995 Halotherapy has been broadly used in physical therapy, spa medicine, paediatrics, rehabilitation of bronchopulmonary disease and otorhinolaryngology. This research points to the possibility of the application of Halo Therapy for respiratory hygiene (airway clearance).

In more recent years, a series of research projects on HT have been undertaken at the Institute of Respiratory Hygiene and halotherapy in Hungary. The institute is concerned with supporting information for the technologies used in rehabilitation of respiratory systems, develops guidelines, delivers training and consults on HT and organises medical and health services and other methods of respiratory care.
